Remember the classic Steptoe & son episode where, following an argument over the decorating, they decide to divide the house in two. Harold and Albert decided to build a partition straight across the kitchen, exactly bisecting the kitchen sink. The mixer tap was alternated by a piece of string which Albert then cut! This 1970's scene was a comic hit but it perhaps started a trend to change the Victorian houses that people lived in. 'Knocking through' and building partition walls became very popular.
